Rebecca Rudolph, AIA

Founding Partner / Principal Architect

Architect Rebecca Rudolph, AIA is Co-founder of the award-winning architecture and design practice Design, Bitches, founded with Catherine Johnson in 2010.

With a background in philosophy and architecture, Rebecca leads concept design work with innovative retail startups including Modern Animal and Breeze, and spearheaded the firm’s City of Los Angeles ADU contribution focused on the creation of accessible multi-generational dwellings.

They have led the design of numerous award-winning projects for the firm, including single-family residences, restaurants, performing arts and retail spaces. Deeply passionate about storytelling and narrative, their interests have led the firm to explore multi-disciplinary work including concept design, branding, and landscape architecture.

Rebecca believes in the power of the sub-conscious to influence spatial experience, and that spaces and places are not complete without the people that use them[1] .

They have taught at the University of Oregon and Woodbury University, and participate regularly in AIA Awards program and academic juries. They have lectured nationally at Columbia, Yale, UCLA , and The Berlage Institute Delft among other institutions.

Rebecca received her MArch from Sci-ARC and her Master in Philosophy from the University of Paris 8-Vincennes-Saint-Denis.

CATHERINE JOHNSON, AIA

Founding Partner / Principal Architect

Architect Catherine Johnson, AIA is Co-founder of the award-winning architecture and design practice Design, Bitches, founded with Rebecca Rudolph in 2010.

She co-directs the Los Angeles-based firm and launched the San Jose office location in 2024.

A creative thought leader, Catherine pushes the boundaries of how places look, perform and feel at a human scale in a changing world.  She has led award winning commercial projects for notable clients including Notion, Verve Coffee Roasters, & Runway Playa Vista, and is currently working on the Superba Food & Bread headquarters.

Known for blending creative risk-taking with pragmatic design, her residential work focuses on architectural longevity and reimagining the future of “home”. Catherine led the design of the noted B+B house, and is currently working on The House of Three Trees.

Catherine believes in fostering connections and enduring relationships with creative partners and communities encourages interventions at a variety of scales.

She is a founding member of the University of Oregon Interior Architecture Advisory Council, has served on the ACLA community outreach committee, and as a Walsh Distinguished Visiting Professor in Interior Architecture at the University of Oregon. She has been a visiting critic at USC, UCLA & SCI-Arc among others, and lectures regularly in the United States and abroad.

Catherine received her MArch from Sci-ARC and her BIARC from the University of Oregon.
